The National Nutrition Agency (Badan Gizi Nasional, BGN) is pushing for the integration of nutrition education into the national school curriculum to promote the health and competitiveness of Indonesian youth. According to Ikeu Tanziha, a member of BGN’s Nutrition Expert Council, incorporating structured and integrated nutrition education in schools is crucial for instilling a comprehensive understanding of nutrition from an early age.
Nutrition goes beyond just food; it shapes the future. By educating children about nutrition, they can develop into healthy, critical thinkers who can contribute meaningfully to society. Schools provide an optimal platform for imparting nutritional knowledge, helping students understand the links between diet, health, and overall well-being to make healthier lifestyle choices.
The proposed curriculum includes topics such as fundamental nutritional concepts, food group classification, nutrient roles in bodily functions, and the consequences of unhealthy eating habits. Nutrition education not only heightens awareness of the importance of a balanced diet but also equips students with the knowledge to make informed dietary decisions and prevent diet-related diseases like obesity and diabetes.
In addition to theoretical knowledge, students would also gain practical skills like cooking and gardening, which they can apply in their daily lives. Integrating nutrition education into the school curriculum is expected to foster a collaborative relationship amongst schools, families, and communities, promoting the message of balanced nutrition across all levels of society.
The BGN is leading the charge in implementing educational campaigns, utilizing social media platforms like YouTube to spread awareness about nutrition through podcasts and videos showcasing the Free Nutritious Meals Program. They are calling on all stakeholders, including government bodies, schools, parents, media, and the public, to support this initiative in pursuit of Indonesia’s Golden Generation 2045 vision.
Ikeu emphasized that the Free Nutritious Meals Program can fully succeed only when accompanied by comprehensive nutrition education that resonates throughout society. As Indonesia strives for a healthier and more prosperous future, integrating nutrition education into the national school curriculum is a crucial step towards achieving this goal.
