President Prabowo Subianto, in a recent event in Klaten, Central Java, highlighted the significance of the launch of 800,081 Merah Putih Village Cooperatives. The initiative aims not only to boost the economic independence of the people but also to eradicate exploitative practices of middlemen and loan sharks that have long preyed on farmers in rural areas. Prabowo, who has been observing these issues since his tenure as Chairman of the Indonesian Farmers Harmony Association (HKTI) in 2004, stressed the chronic problems faced by farmers, such as the lack of transportation and storage facilities leading to post-harvest losses. He also addressed the issue of subsidized fertilizer failing to reach farmers due to bureaucratic hurdles. Moreover, Prabowo shed light on the exploitation of farmers by middlemen manipulating prices when farmers urgently need cash, forcing them to borrow from loan sharks. The President emphasized that the Merah Putih Village Cooperatives serve as a transformative measure to break the cycle of exploitation that has endured for generations, aiming to bring bold and decisive actions to uplift farmers in rural areas.
