BMW and Mercedes, two fierce German luxury car manufacturers, may soon see BMW’s engines moving Mercedes vehicles. Despite rumors of an unholy alliance circulating, these two luxury car manufacturers remain strong rivals. In an interview with Top Gear magazine, Gorden Wagener, the head of design at Mercedes, did not hold back when sharing his opinion on the new iDrive in the iX3. Wagener specifically mentioned that the new screen layout, especially the Panoramic Vision, which technically is not a screen but a projection at the base of the front windshield, was disruptive. He pointed out that the positioning of the screen made it difficult to read, and it required a device to operate it due to the sensitive touch. Wagener spent some time in the new iX3 to reach his conclusion, and despite the controversy his statements may raise, it is clear that he is qualified to weigh in. As Mercedes introduces larger screens like the 39.1-inch Hyperscreen in the latest crossover electric cars, the trend towards bigger screens seems set to continue in future models. However, Wagener expressed his dislike for Audi’s direction, particularly in the Concept C, an electric sports car preview with a stale design language that did not interest him. Wagener critiqued Audi’s use of a 10.4-inch screen, which he felt was too small even by 2025 standards. He also questioned the choice to design interiors that he felt looked outdated, like the Concept TT from 1995, highlighting the importance of design evolution. Wagener’s candid remarks may ruffle feathers in the industry, particularly in Munich and Ingolstadt, but his honesty is noteworthy.
